 Two governments have made the same significant decision: to recognise the global importance of animals by supporting a Universal Declaration on Animal Welfare.
 Four sloth bears were rescued from a life spent ‘dancing’ by authorities in Nepal last week, acting on information provided by WSPA member society the Wildlife Trust of India.
Inhumane dog culling is continuing in
Kerala - India - in an alleged attempt to control rabies.
Citizens For Animals and WSPA member society Animal Rescue
Kerala (ARK) have joined forces to draw international attention
to this cruelty.
Dr. Mohamed Sayed Tantawy, the Grand
Sheikh of one of the most respected Islamic Universities in the
world, the Al Ahzar University in Cairo, has issued an important
legal opinion (fatwa) about the long distance transportation of
animals and slaughter.
The Australian Government recently
announced that it will resume the export of live cattle to
Egypt. The trade was suspended two years ago after a successful
exposure of the conditions upon arrival at the Egyptian
slaughterhouses.
An emergency veterinary team from the
World Society for the Protection of Animals (WSPA) is on
stand-by in Thailand awaiting entry authority to cyclone struck
Myanmar to assess and then relieve the suffering of thousands of
animals that human survivors depend on for food and their
livelihoods.
The fate of 80 illegally held and
endangered Asiatic Black bears hang in the balance as Vietnamese
Authorities decide whether or not to remove them from cruel bear
farms.
A public protest met the start of
Catalonia’s bullfighting season, which signals the slaughter of
over a hundred bulls each year. Anti-bullfighting organisations
took to the Barcelona streets in April to campaign against

In 2007, artist Guillermo Vargas showed an
emaciated live dog in a Nicaraguan gallery. Despite public
outcry, the country’s lack of animal welfare laws meant he faced
no consequences. This year, when Vargas was invited to compete
in an art show in Honduras, WSPA and member society the Honduras
Association for the Protection of Animals and their Environment
(AHPRA) acted to ensure this cruelty could not be repeated by
any artist.
World renowned animal welfare experts
traveled to China to take part in a landmark conference on farm
animal welfare last week.
The Seoul Metropolitan Government is to
propose that dogs in Korea should be re-categorised as
livestock, which would give the dog meat trade in South Korea
legal status.
The World Society for the Protection of
Animals (WSPA) is deeply concerned by reports that China is
culling cats in its capital city in advance of the Olympic Games
in August.
